Craft: Status, perceptions and implications for South African design

Abstract

A questioning of traditional perceptions of craft has led to an international reassessment and reappraisal of its role. Within the contemporary South African situation, some designers are looking to the indigenous cultures that have rich craft heritages, as a means of establishing a national identity.
